Fixing System 32 on hal.dll

whenever I try and start my computer I just get the message.....

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

i was wondering if i can install windows 7 in it instead and take out windows xp?.i want to know if this is possible??? and if i do this will it erase my current info? is there a way that i can save my data?? don't know what to do, help!

to fix this issue you can download hirensboot disk

http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens…

unzip the file you downloaded

burn the iso file

boot the system with the harens boot disk

you will get option to fix missing hal error"
